【写作提升】“有利于”可以怎么说？地道写作表达积累

写作中经常会用到“有利于”的表达，一说到“有利于”，大家最先想到的是be good for或者benefit。这样的表达没有错，但是没有亮点，写作中很难提分。还有一点，英文写作中很忌讳相同的表达反复出现，如果想要表达上文出现过的概念，通常要找一个同义替换，不然文章会显得单调乏味。今天给大家补充几个“有利于”的高级替换。

1. favour

favour是最常用的外刊小词之一，表示“有利于（to provide suitable conditions for something to happen）”。先看一个《经济学人》的例句，讲的是电动汽车淘汰油车：

But its days are numbered. Rapid gains in battery technology favour electric motors instead.

但内燃机的日子所剩不多。电池技术的快速发展对电动汽车更有利。

再看一个《经济学人》例句，讲的是当今“逆全球化”趋势：

Since the 1840s, free-traders have believed that closed economies favour the powerful and hurt the labouring classes.

自19世纪40年代以来，自由贸易主义者一直相信封闭的经济有利于权贵阶层而损害劳工阶层。

句中出现了favour的反义词：hurt“有损、不利于”。顺便说一下hurt的用法吧！我们都知道hurt是什么意思，但在汉译英中翻译“不利于”的时候，很少有人会想起这个词。当对hurt的理解只局限于“伤害”时，就把这个词学死了，我们一直提倡“to express complexity with simple words”这一英语学习理念，即用简单的语言表达复杂的意思。小词大用，才是语言学习的最高境界。比如：

①美国重返亚太计划会阻碍中国的发展，破坏区域和平与安全。

②美国干涉中国内政会不利于两国关系的发展。

③美国在某些地区的军事行动会影响到该地区的和平进程。

看到“阻碍”“破坏”“不利于”“影响”，可能很多人的第一反应是“hamper”“destroy”“be bad to”“have an influence on”，这些词都没问题，不过也可以用一个词“hurt”轻松搞定，这就是小词的威力。

2. help

很多人看到help，第一反应是“帮助”，其实它可以当作“有利于、有助于”来用，看个例句：

Building more motorways and bypasses will help the environment by reducing pollution and traffic jams in towns and cities.

建造更多的高速公路和绕城道路能够减少城镇中的污染和交通堵塞，有利于改善环境。

再看一个例句：

It helps my concentration if I listen to music while I’m working.

我工作时听音乐有助于集中注意力。

不知大家发现没有，当“help+n.”表示“有利于”时，我们在翻译时通常要在名词前补充一个动词，保证句意完整。

再看一个例子，奥巴马曾在每周电台演讲中说过这么一个句子：

Lower taxes and greater investment will help this economy expand.

降低税收和扩大投资有助于经济发展。

总之，在英文写作和汉译英中，可以用help表示“有助于”的概念，用小词表意，使语言更精炼，起到“四两拨千斤”的效果；在英译汉中，可以把help翻译成“有助于、有利于”，可以使译文更加通顺，符合汉语的表达风格。

3. be fertile ground for

fertile本义形容土壤，指“富饶的、肥沃的”，如a fertile region“一块富饶的地区”。由此衍生出一个表达：be fertile ground for ...“是……的沃土、有助于……、有利于”。我们来看一个《纽约客》的例句：

These create fertile ground for radical ideologies to take root.

这些因素有助于极端意识形态生根发芽。

造个句子：

Hangzhou is fertile ground for e-commerce.

杭州有利于电商的发展。（或：杭州是电商的沃土。）

在写作中谈到“线上教育的好处”时，我们就可以用到这个表达：

The growing popularity of online learning platforms is fertile ground for the development of innovative teaching methods in the field of education.

在线学习平台日益风靡，这有助于教育领域创新教学方法的发展。

4. tip the balance in favour of

先看一个《纽约时报》的例句：

In a market torn between growing talk of war and the prospect of fresh government debt, a slide in stocks tipped the balance in favor of bonds.

市场上，关于战争和新政府债务前景的言论日益增加，在此背景下股市下跌，有利于债券上涨。

tip我们都熟悉它的名词含义，表示“小费”，比如leave a $5 tip“留下5美元的小费”。文中作动词，表示“移向一个倾斜的位置（to move into a sloping position）”，比如：

A young boy is standing on a stool, reaching for a cookie jar, and the stool is about to tip.

一个小男孩正站在凳子上，伸手够一个曲奇罐子，凳子眼看就要歪了。

文中tipped the balance in favor of的字面意思是“使天平朝有利于……的方向倾斜”，简而言之就是“有利于……”。我们也可以把in favor of替换成towards，即tip the balance towards，意思不变。我们看一个《卫报》里的句子：

Critics say this could tip the balance towards the most prestigious institutions.

批评者表示，这有利于顶尖学府的发展。

另外，谈到环保问题时，我们可以说：

The implementation of strict emission controls can tip the balance towards a more sustainable environment.

落实严格的排放管控措施，这有利于环境的可持续发展。

举一反三，表示“不利于”，我们可以把in favour of或towards替换成against，即tip the balance against ...。

5. be a boon to/for

先看一个《经济学人》里的例句，讲的是智能手机的便利：

They free people to work from home instead of squeezing onto a train with malodorous strangers. That is a huge boon for parents seeking flexible work hours.

它们让人们能够在家工作，而不是在地铁上和臭烘烘的人挤在一起。这对追求弹性工作时间的父母来说是一个巨大的福利。

boon的意思是“好处（something that is very helpful and makes life easier for you）”，常见搭配为be a boon to/for，表示“有利于”，比如：

AI is a boon for humans.

人工智能对人类是有好处的。

谈到人工智能在语言学习中的应用时，我们可以说：

The use of AI-driven language assessment tools has been a boon to foreign language learners, enabling more efficient and objective evaluation of candidates’ language proficiency.

AI语言评估工具的应用为外语学习者带来了福音，这实现了对考生语言水平更高效和客观的评估。

6. go some way towards

《彭博商业周刊》中有篇文章讲到了马云退休，文中有这么一段话：

Americans like to celebrate the wealthy. The Chinese, Crazy Rich Asians aside, tend to be a lot less indulgent. That goes some way to explaining Jack Ma’s plans to retire as Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.’s co-founder.

美国人喜欢庆祝富贵。与此不同，不考虑电影《摘金奇缘》里的故事情节，中国人在这方面往往要节制得多。这有助于解释马云退休一事，他辞去了阿里巴巴集团控股有限公司的联合创始人职务。

go some way towards/to doing sth或go a long way towards/to doing sth是一个非常地道的表达，可以翻译成“对……有帮助，有利于……，促进（to help a little or a lot to make something happen）”。这一表达可以用在写作中，我们造一个句子：

The idea will definitely go some way towards fixing the problem of careless parking of shared bikes. 这一想法一定有助于解决共享单车乱摆乱放问题。
