Some people travel to relax, while others for experience. But are you tired of the high-priced or crowded tourist attractions in big cities? Here are a few perfect places to go for relaxation.
China’s Silk Road
Traveling to China’s Silk Road is a journey of contrasts: Han and Uyghur ethnicities, Eastern and Central Asian cultures, natural and man-made wonders, dry desert and Alpine Mountain scenery. The scenery is more beautiful when the flowers come out and green grass covers the earth.
Qinghai Lake
Qinghai Lake is the shining jewel of northwest China. The lake is quieter and more peaceful when it is decorated with yellow grasslands and snow-covered mountains. Standing on the banks, you will have a wide view of the scenery. This huge lake and quiet environment will make you feel at peace and in natural beauty.
Daocheng
Daocheng is a popular stopover (中途停留) point on the journey to Yading, a place where you can appreciate the nature of the Tibetan minority culture. In autumn, the red bushes combined with the yellow leaves under the clear blue sky are believed to exhibit the colors of heaven. The temples in these mountains represent the local culture.
Yangtze River
The Yangtze River tour is blessed with beautiful natural landscapes and places of interest to be seen along the way. The ship frequently stops and you can explore the attractions of different cities along the riverbank. The Yangtze River in October is painted with bright fall colors. Also, the weather in October is quite comfortable and cool.

As a senior school graduate, during COVID-19 outbreak, I’ve had many concerns, the greatest one of which was being unable to help my community, except for wearing my mask, following the health officials’ guidelines, and assisting seniors to get their groceries.
Then it struck me. Solving COVID-19 relied only on individual steps and the goodwill of human consciousness. But the next challenge we have to deal with ahead is climate change, known as the silent pandemic without a vaccine (疫苗). So, all I could think of was: Why don’t we do the same, and deal with it through our everyday activities?
I’ve created an App, EnRoute, to help reduce carbon emissions (排放) from shopping and transport activities. Even though I’ve never coded (编码) before, my will was greater than any excuse I could think of. The first version was just a one-screen App. Through the quarantines (隔离), I’ve had only 70 people to test the concept with and created little impact. Plus, leading a social organization seemed like a small boat in a rough sea to me. But instead of giving up, I chose to fill the gap.
And the coolest thing is that the more I was learning, the more people got interested in the idea. Through every leadership program, I built a stronger EnRoute Community where each person was equally passionate and brave to make a change. Their enthusiasm was my greatest fuel. At least I traveled across the world without a single carbon emission.
Fast forward to today, through EnRoute, over 4,000 people reduced more than 150,000 kg carbon emissions. The App turned into an international movement. And I even had the pleasure to be the first-ever Macedonian Global Teen Leader+Princess Diana Award Winner.
It turns out that except for being a good time to reflect and relax, bridge years can be a powerful tool to change the world as well!
4. How did the author feel during COVID-19?
A. Upset. B. Alarmed.
C. Worried. D. Ignorant.
5. What inspired the author to create the App, EnRoute?
A. Individual devotion to pandemic prevention.
B. Similarity between carbon emissions and COVID-19.
C. The author’s involvement in community service.
D. The influence of human activities on global warming.
6. What is the benefit of the App?
A. It unites many countries.
B. It gets many people to change.
C. It inspires the author to enjoy himself.
D. It proves the author’s ability to change others.
7. Which of the following can best describe the author?
A. Patient and selfless. B. Able and outgoing.
C. Creative and generous. D. Determined and responsible.

As the effects of climate change become more disastrous, well-known research institutions and government agencies are focusing new money and attention on an idea: artificially cooling the planet, in the hope of buying humanity more time to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
That strategy, called solar climate intervention (干预) or solar geoengineering, involves reflecting more of the sun’s energy back into space — abruptly reducing global temperatures in a way that imitates the effects of ash clouds flowing out from the volcanic eruptions. The idea has been considered as a dangerous and fancied solution, one that would encourage people to keep burning fossil fuels while exposing the planet to unexpected and potentially threatening side effects, producing more destructive hurricanes, wildfires floods and other disasters.
But, as global warming continues, producing more destructive hurricanes, wildfires, floods and other disasters, some researchers and policy experts say that concerns about geoengineering should be outweighed by the imperative to better understand it, in case the consequences of climate change become so terrible that the world can’t wait for better solutions.
One way to cool the earth is by injecting aerosols (气溶胶) into the upper layer of the atmosphere, where those particles reflect sunlight away from the earth. That process works, according to Douglas MacMartin, a researcher at Cornell University.
“We know with 100% certainty that we can cool the planet,” he said in an interview. What’s still unclear, he added, is what happens next. Temperature, MacMartin said, is an indicator for a lot of climate effects. “What does it do to the strength of hurricanes?” he asked, “What does it do to agriculture production? What does it do to the risk of forest fires?”
Another institution funded by the National Science Foundation will analyze hundreds of simulations of aerosol injection, testing the effects on weather extremes around the world. One goal of the research is to look for a sweet spot: the amount of artificial cooling that can reduce extreme weather events without causing broader changes in regional rainfall patterns or similar impacts.
1. Why do researchers and government agencies work on cooling the earth?
A. To prevent natural disasters.
B. To win more time to reduce gas emissions.
C. To imitate volcanic eruptions.
D. To encourage more people to burn fossil fuels.
2. What are researchers worried about in terms of global warming?
A. More volcanoes will throw out.
B. More solar energy will go into space.
C. More disasters will endanger the future of the world.
D. People will keep burning fossil fuels to keep warm.
3. What can be inferred from Douglas’ words in an interview?
A. He thinks more research remains to be done.
B. He is optimistic about the effect of cooling the earth.
C. He is concerned about the reduction in agriculture production.
D. He disapproves of the practice of solar climate intervention.
4. What do the underlined words “sweet spot” in the last paragraph mean?
A. The rainfall pattern of a region. B. The modest drop in temperature.
C. The number of extreme weather events. D. The injection amount of aerosol.
D
China’s historic 23-day Chang’e 5 mission has not only obtained precious rock and soil samples from the moon, but has also brought back a group of seeds that traveled the furthest in the nation’s agricultural and forestry histories. More than 30 kinds of seeds, including that of rice, oats etc., were placed inside the multi-module Chang’e 5 spacecraft and orbited around the moon for about 15 days.
Scientists wished to check what would happen to the seeds after being exposed to extraterrestrial (地外的) forces in lunar orbit and also hoped that they could develop beneficial mutations (突变). This mission offered good opportunities to scientists, which enabled them to deepen their studies on the effect of cosmic rays on the growth and evolution of life on Earth.
Space-based mutation breeding refers to the process of exposing seeds to forces such as microgravity, vacuums and cosmic radiation during a spaceflight and then sending them back to Earth for further observation and planting. Researchers observe and examine several generations of plants grown from space-bred seeds and investigate their mutations — some are positive and desirable while others are negative. Those with positive mutations will be kept and analyzed, and will be introduced to farmers after their certification and approval.
Space breeding can generate mutations faster and more conveniently than ground-based experiments and can bring about some desirable traits that are otherwise hard to introduce. Compared with natural or conventionally bred types of plants, space-developed versions with positive mutations usually feature higher nutritional content, greater annual yields, shorter growth periods and better resistance to diseases and insect pests.
China conducted its first space breeding experiment in 1987, using a satellite to carry seeds into space. Since then, hundreds of kinds of seeds and seedlings have traveled with dozens of Chinese spaceships. Space breeding has helped to produce more than 200 new types of mutated plants in China that have been approved for large-scale cultivation, ranging from grains to vegetables and fruits. The Chang’e 5 robotic mission returned 1,731 grams of lunar rock and soil to Earth, marking a historic accomplishment 44 years after the last lunar substances were taken back.
5. Why were the seeds placed inside Chang’e 5?
A. To pick out the fittest for mutations. B. To understand extraterrestrial forces.
C. To study the intensity of cosmic rays. D. To expose them to a special environment.
6. What do we know about space-based mutation breeding?
A. It is not a time-consuming process. B. Mutations develop in a random way.
C. It often brings about desirable effects. D. Approval will be granted to mutated plants.
7. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. It is a custom to put seedlings on a spacecraft.
B. China was the first to do a space breeding experiment.
C. It is only a decade since seeds were last taken into space.
D. Space breeding has brought us commercial benefits.
8. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A. Space-bred Seeds Offer Great Chances B. Chang’e 5 Returns with a Big Package
C. Plant Mutations Result in a Better Life D. Seeds from Space Mark a New History

When I was 15, I followed Roy to the deep mountain in search of astragalus root (黄芪), which is a rare and valuable plant.
We searched the plant for a whole day, but without luck. We found nothing. As it got dark, I asked Roy to go back, but he refused and said, “I would rather sleep on the mountain tonight and continue to search tomorrow!”
I desired to go home but I lacked the courage to go back alone, so I chose to stay and help Roy put up a simple tent under a tree. It was freezing cold on the mountain and there were scores of mosquitoes, which made it impossible for us to have a good sleep. What’s worse, we heard a wolf howling nearby! I was so scared.
“I heard that wolves bully (欺负) the weak and fear the strong,” Roy told me. “Let’s strike the shovel (铲子) and shout to scare it away!” He found a stone and started to strike the shovel. And then he shouted as he struck the shovel. Inspired, I followed him to shout loudly.
Half an hour later, I felt cold all over the body. And the cold air on the mountain made that worse. My stomach began to ache. I lay in the tent, shivering, sweating and then falling unconscious. Roy was shocked with panic. He called my name screamingly, but I just made no response. He tried to put me on his back to carry me home but without success. At last, he went out and found some tree branches and blocked up the entrance to our tent with them. Then, he ran to the direction of our village as fast as he could.
Not knowing how much time went by, I heard some sounds approaching near. I thought it was Roy but I didn’t hear him saying anything. In a shock, I sat up with a rush. At that moment, my eyes had adjusted to the darkness. Through a hole of our tent, I saw two animals like dogs removing the tree branches with their mouths and claws. They were wolves!

National Crisis vs Heroic Nation
The course of history is never smooth. It is sometimes beset with difficulties and obstacles and nothing short of a heroic spirit can help surmount them.
A mighty long river sometimes flows through a broad section with plains lying boundless on either side, its waters rolling on non-stop for thousands upon thousands of miles. Sometimes it comes up against a narrow section flanked by high mountains and steep cliffs, winding through a course with many a perilous twist and turn. A nation, in the course of its development, fares likewise.
The historical course of man’s life is just like a journey. A traveller on a long journey passes through now a broad, level plain, now a rugged, hazardous road. While a determined traveller cheerfully continues his journey upon reaching a safe and smooth place, he finds it still more fascinating to come to a rugged place, the enormously magnificent spectacle of which, he feels, is better able to generate in him a wonderful sensation of adventure.
The Chinese nation is now confronted with a rugged and dangerous section of its historical course. Nevertheless, there is also in this section a spectacle of enormous magnificence that inspires in us passers-by a delightful sensation of splendor. And this delightful sensation, however, can only be shared by those with a heroic spirit.
The Yangtse River and the Yellow River are both symbolic of our national spirit. The two mighty rivers negotiate deserts and gorges until their turbid torrents surge forward with irresistible force. The present national crisis can never obstruct the advance of our national life. Let us brace up our spirits and march through this rugged, dangerous road to the tune of our solemn, stirring songs. The greatest joy of life, mind you, is to build up our country during its most difficult days.

be likely to do sth. 故填be found。
5. that/which 考查定语从句。 故填that/which。
be different from是固定搭配,表示“与……不同”。故填different。

My Idol
Believe it or not, my grandmother is my idol. She is no different from other grandmothers who devote their love to their children and grandchildren. Then what on earth makes her my idol?
It is her desire to learn that contributes to my respect. She didn’t have any school when young but learned to read and write by herself. Besides, she also learned to use the smart phone. Influenced by my grandmother, I realized the importance of study from an early age, which made me always excellent in study.
Don’t you think she deserves to be my idol?

Paragraph 1:
Their sudden appearance shocked me and a cold sweat broke out all over my body. But I managed to gather myself together. I struck the shovel left beside me with a stone and screamed as loudly as I could. The two wolves were frightened at first and stepped back. But after a short time of hesitation, they continued to remove the branches. And no matter how hard I struck the shovel, they just ignored. I was in despair. But I still held the stone and shovel firmly, thinking I wouldn’t give up without a fight.
Paragraph 2:
Strangely, I saw the two wolves turn around and run away in a flash. “Are they afraid of my shovel?” I wondered. But I realized I was wrong when I saw many flashlights approaching my tent quickly. It turned out that Roy had run away to seek help. With a dozen of villagers, Roy was coming to my rescue! They were calling my name and I responded as they removed the branches. As Roy got into the tent and hugged me, I couldn’t help crying, both in fright and relief.
