Ⅲ.阅读理解
The Coral Sea is home to an amazing variety of turtles, sharks, whales, dolphins, large fish, birds, corals, plants, and many other species. Many of these species are endangered elsewhere in the world, but still survive in the healthy environment of the Coral Sea.
The Coral Sea is a large series of coral reefs located off the northeast coast of Australia. This area is three times larger than Australia’s famous Great Barrier Reef, which the Coral Sea borders.
The Coral Sea is one of the few coral reef environments that have remained largely undamaged by overfishing, oil and gas exploration and pollution. However, statistics show that coral reefs around the world are disappearing five times faster than rainforests. It is very likely that in the near future the Coral Sea will face the same threats to its existence.
The Australian government is currently looking at options for protecting the Coral Sea but has made no decisions.Environmentalists are pushing for laws to declare the Coral Sea area a marine protected area. This would mean a large “notake zone” for fishermen,a “noexploration zone” for gas and oil companies and a “nodump zone” for pollution. This would make the Coral Sea a marine park larger than any other park in the world.
We can write letters to Australian leaders,Australian environmental protection agencies, and Australian friends,to let them know that people worldwide support this protection of the Coral Sea.To lose this last great marine wildness would be a loss for the whole world.

A new report says plastic is responsible for the damage to the oceans and the undersea environment. The findings were announced recently at a United Nations conference. 1
Plastic thrown away carelessly makes its way into rivers and other waterways. 2 After a while,it collects in the sea.And plastic never goes away.Plastic is not biodegradabledestroyed by bacteria or natural processes.Instead,it just breaks up into smaller pieces over time. The oceans contain a lot of chemicals and other pollutants. 3 That means harmful material may get into our food supply.
4 Human beings cause pollution and they can take steps to stop it.They can use fewer singleuse containers and throw plastic away correctly.Plastic recycling programmes also work where old bottles and other plastic are collected, broken down and used to make new products.
The report also calls on companies to improve methods for using plastic. 5 And it calls for information about the way plastic is thrown out or removed from use.
By putting a new value on plastic, industry has a special reason to clean up the environment. But all of the companies must join to deal with the problem.
A.Then,fish may eat the plastic.
B.It asks them to better measure and direct plastic use.
C.The plastic eventually reaches coastal areas and ocean waters.
D.The report talks about harm to sea life and what might be done to improve the situation.
E.Plastic should be gathered together and reused.

REACHING OUT ACROSS THE SEA
Trade and 1 (curious) have often formed the foundation of mankind’s greatest achievements.
2 (complete) the great map of the world was a strong passion for the people of early civilisations. Marco Polo’s tales inspired European explorers 3 (search) for sea routes from west to east. However, merchants and explorers from the East set sail from east to west many years before Columbus first did.
In ancient times, silk from China found 4 way overland to India, the Middle East, and Rome, along what became known 5 the Silk Road. A trading route across the sea was also extended along the coasts of the Indian Ocean, centred around Ceylon (now Sri Lanka ). Here, merchants from China and many other places met 6 (negotiate) trade deals, which also led to more
7 (aware) of each other’s cultures. Over the centuries, further trading allowed more exploration of the regions to the west China, as recorded in Du Huan’s Record of My Travels in the eighth century.
Later, the Ming Dynasty further developed relations with these regions. Between 1405 and 1433, seven large fleets sailed west on voyages of trade and exploration. These fleets were a sight to behold and were in a league of their own at that time. Under the command of Zheng He, they set sail from the South China Sea across the Indian Ocean to the mouth of the Red Sea, and then to the east coast of Africa. African 8 (royalty) families sent gifts such as giraffes as gestures of friendship in return 9 gold, silk, and spices. Although China withdrew 10 further expeditions after 1433, these land and sea routes remained active channels between other cultures for centuries.
11 (reach) out across the sea remains a strong desire today. The ancient sea routes travelled by Zheng He are being revisited with the 2lst Century Maritime Silk Road, which is part of the Belt and Road Initiative. The aim of this initiative is 12 (encourage) cooperation and trade across the historic Silk Road areas, and strengthen the bonds between China and the rest of the world. Trading has grown greatly in recent years, and will continue to do so in years to come. China has invested billions in systems and services along these routes, which will help to greatly develop the whole area for the benefit of future trade and cultural exchange.
China has also joined its friends across the sea on other important projects. Although the ancient sea routes of Zheng He have been travelled many times, there are still many other places 13
(leave) to explore. In recent years, China has joined other nations on several expeditions to explore the Arctic. From a scientific point of view, there is an 14 (urgency) need to study the Arctic in order to understand climate change and its effects.
Hundreds of years on, and with the latest technology 15 hand, the need to trade and the desire to enhance relationships will drive China to reach out across the sea far into the future.

Express your opinions on sea exploration
Text 1
When people talk of exploring the sea more, they usually mean 1 (exploit) it. Sea exploration has caused many problems and will continue to cause more.
More exploration means more pollution. The Deepwater Horizon spilled over 200 million gallons of oil into the sea in 2010. Plastic pollution is also bad, 2 (kill) many birds and fish, and has even been found in our tap water.
Mining for resources is very damaging, especially in the Arctic. Because of climate change, there is less ice now, 3 means we can look for more fossil fuels further north. But if we burn these, the ice will melt more and this negative cycle will continue. Climate change is warning us that something is very wrong.
Overfishing is another problem. Whales and dolphins are also hunted for their meat or for so-called research. Although this 4 (ban) in 1982, some countries are still “ 5 (murder)” these intelligent creatures without 6 (merciful).
The sea is home 7 life, not human beings’ 8 (possess). It is huge, but it is more sensitive than we think. If we do not protect it, future generations will not forgive us.
Text 2
To 9 (true) understand our planet, we must explore the oceans which cover most of it. 10
(opponent) may be concerned, but sea exploration is important for our future. For example, scientific research ships can help address important issues such as climate change. We need to understand 11 is happening to our planet so that we can take action. Therefore, more research is necessary.
Understanding more about the sea will also help us manage its resources 12 (good). Logging new species will improve our understanding of life on the earth. It may help us discover new medicines, as well as new sources of food and energy. Accessing the deep ocean may also help us to predict 13 (event) such as earthquakes.
The population of the world is growing and we need new resources for future development. There are probably vast amounts of resources under the sea and ice, not just oil and gas but also valuable minerals.
Of course, there are still environmental risks. However, these should 14 (balance) with economic needs. 15 (hope), as technology improves, we may have more options for managing this balance.
